Description

Zepdon 400 mg Tablet contains raltegravir, an antiretroviral medicine used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. It belongs to a class of medicines known as integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs), which help reduce the amount of virus in the body when taken as prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. Raltegravir works by blocking the HIV integrase enzyme, which the virus needs to insert its genetic material into human immune cells. By inhibiting this step, the medicine helps prevent the virus from multiplying and infecting new cells. Zepdon is typically used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) alongside other HIV medicines. Regular treatment with antiretroviral therapy can help control HIV infection, improve immune system function, and reduce the risk of HIV-related complications. However, it does not cure HIV, and ong

Benefits

  • Helps reduce HIV viral load in the body

  • Supports improvement of immune system function (CD4 cells)

  • Part of modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens

  • Integrase inhibitor mechanism targeting viral replication

  • Oral tablet formulation for convenient daily treatment

Indications and Usage

Zepdon (raltegravir) may be prescribed for:

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection

  • Use in combination with other antiretroviral medicines

  • Treatment of adult and pediatric patients as part of HIV management

Treatment decisions are based on viral load, immune status, and clinical evaluation.

How it Works

Raltegravir works by blocking the HIV integrase enzyme, which is essential for viral replication. Normally, HIV inserts its genetic material into human immune cells using this enzyme. Once integrated, the virus can replicate and spread throughout the body.

By inhibiting integrase, raltegravir prevents the virus from integrating into the host cell DNA. This blocks an important step in the HIV life cycle and reduces the ability of the virus to multiply. When used in combination with other antiretroviral medicines, this mechanism helps lower viral load and slow disease progression when taken as prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional.

Dosage & Administration

  • Zepdon tablets are taken orally with water.

  • The medicine may be taken with or without food.

  • It is usually prescribed twice daily unless directed otherwise by a healthcare professional.

  • Tablets should be swallowed whole.

  • Treatment should not be stopped without medical advice, as this may lead to viral resistance.

Side Effects

Common side effects

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

Serious side effects

  • Severe allergic reactions

  • Liver problems

  • Muscle problems including rhabdomyolysis (rare)

  • Immune reconstitution syndrome in some patients

Patients should contact a healthcare provider if severe symptoms occur.

Warning and Precaution

  • Possible liver problems, especially in patients with hepatitis B or C

  • Risk of muscle-related side effects in rare cases

  • Monitor liver function and viral load during treatment

  • Inform healthcare providers about all medications and supplements being used

  • Use caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease

Patient Guidance

  • Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider

  • Do not miss doses to avoid drug resistance

  • Attend regular HIV viral load and CD4 monitoring tests

  • Inform your doctor about all medications or supplements

  • Continue safe practices to prevent HIV transmission

Clinical Trial & Approvals

Raltegravir was the first integrase inhibitor approved for HIV treatment and has been evaluated in multiple clinical trials demonstrating significant reduction in viral load when used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy. Based on these studies, raltegravir received approval from regulatory agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.
